Equality Scheme

VisitScotland believes equality is integral to a successful and thriving tourism industry, and we strive to enhance access to tourism and promote its social and economic benefits.

In our role as a service provider to both tourism businesses and visitors to Scotland, as well as our commitment as an employer, we aim to ensure the delivery of equality throughout our organisation.

Our Equality Duties

The Equality Act 2010 sets out personal characteristics that are protected by law, known as the ‘protected characteristics’. These are:

  • Age
  • Disability
  • Gender reassignment
  • Marriage and civil partnership
  • Pregnancy and maternity
  • Race
  • Religion or belief
  • Sex
  • Sexual orientation

In line with our obligations under the Public Sector Equality Duty, we are committed to giving due regard in our work to the need to:

  • Eliminate discrimination against, and advance equality of opportunity for, people who share relevant protected characteristics.
  • Foster good relations between people who share a protected characteristic and those who do not.

Our Equal Opportunities Policy

As an equal opportunity employer, VisitScotland  treats all existing and prospective employees fairly with equal access to all employment opportunities.

Our Equal Opportunities policy details the commitment of our Chief Executive, Board of Directors and Senior Management Team to VisitScotland’s promotion of equality of opportunity:

Our Equality Outcomes and Mainstreaming Reports

We have dedicated equality outcomes which guide our work towards mainstreaming equality. The following reports give details of our equality outcomes and the progress we have made towards meeting these, and to integrating equality into our work.

These reports help us to meet our obligations under the specific duties of the Public Sector Equality Duty.

Accessible Tourism

We have a dedicated programme of activity focused on promoting the economic and social benefits of Accessible Tourism. The programme supports tourism businesses and destinations in catering for visitors who have accessibility requirements such as disabled people, families with young children and older people, so that tourism in Scotland is inclusive and available to all.

More information about accessing this market and its growing economic potential can be found on our Accessible Tourism section, which also offers a range of support materials that can be downloaded for free.
